Listen to Previous Juniors

The benefits of playing golf from a young age last a lifetime. Listen to what former Juniors at Monifieth have to say about what golf has done for them.

Jemma's Story

Monifieth GC has had its fair share of success over the years with some players going on to international success as well as dozens more that have made their mark at county and regional level

I am grateful to have come through during Ann Hunter’s time, which at its peak boasted forty girls in the group aged between 8&18 years old.

Monifieth provided five players in the Angus team of eight that won the Scottish team championship for the first ever time at Montrose in 2012 and repeated the feat twice more by 2016.

I will always look at my junioir golf days at Monifieth with nothing but fond memories. I made great pals, saw lots of places and I was fortunate enough to travel to America on a golf scholarship aged 18. This was a life changing experience and again I met players and made pals from all over the world, a lot of who I am still in touch with today.

Golf is a great platform for kids to exercise, meet new friends and share a common interest forming bonds that last a lifetime.

Heather's Story

Some of my fondest memories are of my time as a Junior at Monifieth Golf Club. I learned to play on the “Ludie,” seven holes each Friday during the summer months, playing a Texas scramble with Monifieth legend, Ann Hunter. At the age of 11, I had no idea how those Friday nights, and the example set by Ann, would shape me into who I am today.

With the support of Monifieth’s junior section, I was fortunate to develop into a fairly skilled player, being selected to play for Scotland for the first time at the age of 16, and earning a NCAA Division One full scholarship to a university in North Carolina at the age of 18. With this scholarship came a free education at a nationally recognised institution and the opportunity to travel all across the US competing with some of the best players in the world, it was truly a dream. Without the skills I developed during my junior career, both physically and mentally, and the support of the golf community, I know that I would not be sitting here today, reminiscing on the countless memories I have made on golf courses across the world.

Not only did my time as a junior help me develop into a good golfer, it truly shaped me as a person. Through travelling to competitions across Scotland as a junior and spending hours upon hours practicing and competing at a high level, I developed strong interpersonal skills and a determination to achieve anything I put my mind to. I also  When challenged with moving to the US at the age of 18, I felt confident in my golf skills and in my ability to start a life halfway around the world, because my family and community believed in me. Most importantly, I believed in myself, a trait that I had started to develop 7 years earlier on Friday nights on the “Ludie.”

One of the greatest gifts golf has given me is the many close friends I am still in touch with today. From partners and teammates to even just the people I was paired with in a tournament one time, the connections made on a golf course are unlike any other and it is a benefit that I couldn’t have even imagined when I first began playing.
